-1- Introduction To MODShell
Basically MODShell is a shell for those command line players
that don't have a built in shell (a mod file selection screen). This
shell works for WOWII,Dual Mod Player, and PMP. This program is useful
for those people who like DMP and is also a good replacement for Wowy-
Ka-Zowy. It is based on an arrow selection interface. MODShell has a
preview mod feature which allows you to play mod files internally
before using your favorite player to play them. This is also useful if
memory constraints prevent you from playing those huge mod files such
as 'Dieagain' and 'Space Debris'. I hope you enjoy using MODShell as
much as I had programming it (and use it as long as it took me to debug
it he he he).
-2- Installation of MODShell
This will be a short section because installation is very simple.
Just simply make a directory for MODShell such as \modshell and copy
the self extracting archive to the directory and then run it and it will
automatically unpack itself. For example:
C:\>MD C:\MODSHELL
C:\>CD \MODSHELL
C:\MODSHELL>COPY C:\whereever the archive is\MODS210.ZIP
C:\MODSHELL>PKUNZIP -o MODS210.ZIP
Unpacking MODShell
If you have MODShell v2.0 then you MUST run UPDATE.EXE!
It is that simple. Your directories can change and so can the drive.
Installation is that simple.
-3- Configuration of MODShell
To configure MODShell, go to the MODShell directory and type MODCFG.
Sample configuration options:
1) Player to use: WowII Player
2) DMP Directory: C:\DMP
3) PMP Directory: C:\PMP
4) WowII Directory: C:\WOWII
5) MOD File Directory: C:\WOWII
6) External Player Sampling Rate: 22000
7) Internal Player Sampling Rate: 15909
8) DMA Buffer Size (For WowII Only): 22000
9) Sound Board: SoundBlaster Pro
A) IRQ Number: 5
B) DMA Channel: 1
C) Surround Sound: No
D) Registration Name: MOD Lover
E) Registration Code: Unregistered Copy!
Escape) Exit Setup
The configuration program automatically makes the config file
Options:
Option 1 - Selects which player to use WowII or DMP
Option 2 - Directory where DMP.EXE is located. A trailing backslash is
automatically stripped off.
Option 3 - Same as option 2 except it tells where PMP.EXE is located.
Option 4 - Same as option 2 except it tells where WOWII.EXE is located.
Option 5 - This tells where MODShell should search for mod files. Again
the trailing backslash is stripped off.
Option 6 - Sampling rate for external player
Option 7 - Sampling rate for mod previewer - should be around 5000 for XT
should be about 13000 for AT.
Option 8 - DMA buffer size for WowII.
Option 9 - Sound board selection. Options are Soundblaster, soundblaster
pro, soundblaster 16, pro audio spectrum, pro audio spectrum 16,
and pc speaker. PC Speaker is available only on DMP.
Option A - IRQ Number for sound blaster on external players - usually 5
Option B - DMA Channel number for sound blaster on external players
usually 1
Option C - Surround sound mode on/off. This is only supported on DMP
version 2.72 or greater. Can be used with or without a
surround sound decoder!
Option D - Your name for registration
Option E - Code you recieve when you send your registration form in
Escape will quit. 'Y' saves config file, 'N' exits without save, and
escape returns to config.
This concludes your configuration of MODShell.
-4- Running MODShell
To start out let me say that MODShell REQUIRES a mouse.
To run modshell simply type MODSHELL. If you are registered then it
will say it is registered. Otherwise you will be delayed for a short moment
so you can think about the benifits of registration. If MODShell is
unregistered then your mod file limit is 32. If registered then you have a
limit of 128 mod files. It will scan and then come up with the logo. Press
enter or click on OK to continue. Then you will come up with the main
screen.
The up and down arrows go up and down one mod file. The left and right
buttons move down and up 15 mod files respectivly. Clicking on the button
with the mod file name runs the external player. The status shows the mod
song name and the file size in Kb. Clicking on the Play MOD button runs
the mod previewer. The stop button stops it. You can use MODShell while
the previewer is running but it is not recommended. It will slow it down
considerably. To make it speed back up or to stop the previewer click on
stop. To quit click on quit or press escape. By the way when the
external player quits and returns to the main screen and it returns to
the mod file you had selected. That concludes running MODShell.
